MESSAGES FROM MR. CRAFT- 10/8/2018

Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and think about school related things.  This morning’s 2:00am random thought:  This time next week we will be half way through the first semester.

A few important opportunities for the Callaghan Community are happening this week.  First of all, this week is National School Lunch Week!  I invite all parents or grandparents to come eat lunch one day this week with your kid(s).  To help us out if you plan to do so, please call the school no later than the morning you plan to come and let us know what your menu choice is.  (I hope you like the format our PTO’s new weekly newsletter which includes the weekly breakfast and lunch menu.)  The price for an adult lunch is $3.05.  Come join us for lunch this week if your schedule allows.

October is Awareness Month.  On Wednesday, October 10, everyone at Callaghan is invited to wear orange which is the awareness color for all childhood cancers.  In addition, the Callaghan PTO is asking anyone who wears orange on Wednesday this week to donate $1.00.  All of the money that is collected will be donated to the family of Dakota Ward, little brother of our student, Abby Ward, who is bravely fighting a battle with leukemia.  So on Wednesday, we will wear orange, donate a buck (or more), and show our support for this family.

The PTO begins their fall fundraiser this week.  This year’s hot item is frozen pizza kits from Little Caesar’s.  Information and an order form will be coming home with all students on Monday, October 8.

With three opportunities this week, I look forward to a good turnout for each one.
LUNCH!  ORANGE!  PIZZA!

MESSAGES FROM MR. CRAFT- 9/28/2018

Monday, October 1 is Parent-Teacher Conference Day!  Teachers will be available from noon until 7:00 for individual conferences, so please make arrangements with your child’s teacher to stop by.  Conference day is for EVERYBODY!  Please don’t be under the impression that you don’t need to visit the school if your child is doing well in school or if you haven’t heard anything from your child’s teacher.  We welcome every parent to come in and discuss their child’s academic success and behaviors.  I’ll be around and available for parents who would like to confer with me as well.  I will also open up the computer lab to encourage all Callaghan parents to participate in an important school division survey.  Keep reading for more information…

The Alleghany County Public Schools division is on a continuous journey to make our schools the best places for students to learn, staff to work, and parents to send their children for a good education. In this effort, parent support is very much appreciated. It is important to gather feedback from you to celebrate successes and identify areas for growth. Please take a few minutes and complete this Parent Satisfaction Survey to help provide this feedback.  All responses are anonymous to encourage open and honest feedback.

This survey isn’t one of those surveys that you take and then never see the results or see any changes made based on the results.  Once the survey is complete, the results will be analyzed by an outside organization. The data from the survey will be sent to each school and the Superintendent. Then, most importantly, you will get to view the results of the survey which will be shared with parents and the community.

The survey can be accessed beginning October 1 through October 18  by clicking on this link.

Alleghany Parent Satisfaction Survey

Again, if you would rather take the opportunity to participate in the survey here at Callaghan school, the computer lab will be available from noon to 7:00pm on Monday during Parent-Teacher conferences, or just call the school at any time that’s convenient for you, and we will set you up to complete it.

Likewise, students will also be participating in a short, anonymous survey to help us understand the students’ perspective of their learning environment. Teachers will administer the survey in their classes during the October 1st -18th window and provide any assistance that students may require.

Thank you for interest in and support of your child’s education with Alleghany County Public Schools.

MESSAGES FROM MR. CRAFT- 9/24/2018

My mom says I need to update my blog more often.  Mom’s right.  Hi Ma.

I have scheduled parent advisory meetings each month.  These meetings are open to all Callaghan parents, and I encourage you to attend.  I always come away with a feeling of accomplishment from the good discussion and ideas that are tossed around the table.  The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 2 at 6:30pm.  We will always meet in the multipurpose room just to the left after you come into the main entrance.

A special event is being organized for Thursday, November 8 from 6:00-8:00pm.  Mark your calendars for a Family Reading Night combined with First Books and our annual Book Fair.  Literacy activities, special guest readers, student displays, food, door prizes and of course the book fair will be open for after-hours business.  More details to come in the near future.

A big shout out to all parents who ensure that their kids come to school!  It goes without saying that regular attendance is critical to the academic success of all students.  Did you realize that if a student misses 18 days of school throughout the year, he/she has missed 10% of instruction that is taught during that year.  This amount of instruction and missed assignments can be difficult for any student to overcome.  According to Alleghany County Public Schools policy JED, eighteen absences is considered excessive, no matter the reason for absences.  I encourage all parents to take time and review the attendence policy here.  http://www.alleghany.k12.va.us/UserFiles/Servers/Server_8986/File/Superintendent/Policy%20Manual/Section%20J/JED.pdf

On another exciting note, I am in the planning stages of initating an after-school remediation program where students who need just a little bit of an academic boost can hang out with a few teachers after school a couple days per week and work to improve their skills in an informal, no-stress setting.  I’ll keep you posted.  If there are any folks out there interested in serving as a Callaghan volunteer, call the school and set up a time to come in for a brief training session.  I’ll provide you with all the information and paperwork needed to start that process.

As always, I am available to entertain questions, concerns or regular run-of-the-mill conversation.  Just stop by, give me a call or shoot me an email.

Until next time….

MESSAGES FROM MR. CRAFT- 8/14/2018

Well, in my opinion, we’ve started the 2018-2019 school year on a great note.  The only issue which has caused a few more gray hairs in my beard has been getting all students on the correct buses going to the right places at the end of the day; however, after the first two days, the process has started to tighten up and will continue to do so.  If there are changes to your child’s regular bus routine, please call the school and let us know as soon as possible.

We are in the process of preparing to rollout the much anticipated Chromebooks to students.  In the next couple weeks, I’m sure your students will have many cool stories to tell about having and using their own Chromebooks in class.  We are hosting another parent Chromebook training on Tuesday, August 14 at 5:30 in the school cafeteria for any parents who have not attended a training session yet.  Before a student is issued a Chromebook, his/her parents must attend the one-time training.  For parents who have older children in other schools and have already completed a training session, you do not have to attend again.   There is also an annual $12.00 accidental damage fee that must be paid as well.  There is a waiver application for families who cannot pay at this time.  Keep in mind that if you have more than one child at Callaghan, the fee must be paid for each child.

I’ve seen lots of great things going on in classrooms as I’ve been passing by.  I’m proud of the instructional team here at Callaghan and proud to be part of this family.

I hope to update this blog weekly, so visit again soon.  Thanks for checking in.
